Cooler temperatures, magnificent displays of color, and the North Carolina State Fair are a few examples of what makes Fall in Raleigh, NC special. Fall is the perfect season for outdoor celebrations. In our previous post, Three Quick Tips for Fall Weddings, we discussed organizational and decorative ideas to help you plan your event. In this article, we will focus on fall foods that will delight your guests.
1) Fall Celebration Starters
Comfortable autumn weather provides a great opportunity to treat your guests to heartier appetizers. Rather than traditional salads for starters, consider serving soups or stews. Great fall soups and stews include:
- Potato Soup
- Broccoli and Cheddar Bisque
- Roast Beef Stew
- Brunswick Stew
- Chilis: vegetable or meat
You may opt to serve salad and soup as a meal. In that case, include seasonal elements on your salads like almonds and pecans, dates, cranberries, and feta cheese. For a final touch, add fresh cornbread and hushpuppies to the menu.
2) Autumn Entrees
Hosting your wedding or event in the fall is a great opportunity to celebrate with a Thanksgiving-style banquet. Serving carved turkey, stuffing, and all the fixings will make your event one your guests will remember. Besides turkey, chicken, lamb, and ribs are excellent options for meat. Add boiled potatoes, fried apples, squash, and asparagus for a hearty meal like grandmother would make.
Nevertheless, nothing says “Carolina in the Fall” like a pig-pickin'. Slow smoked pulled pork in a vinegar-based sauce is as North Carolinian as NASCAR and moonshine. If you choose to serve BBQ, make sure to include some combination of hushpuppies, corn-sticks, boiled potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, and sweet tea.
3) Fall Wedding Snacks and Treats
While you and your bridal party are taking photographs, there are several seasonal snack possibilities for your reception guests to enjoy. Before or between meals consider treating your guests to the following:
- Assorted nuts
- Roasted peanuts
- Sugar coated pecans
- Caramel apples
- Apple crisp
- Apple butter or pumping butter spreads
- Pumpkin bread
4) Warm Beverages
Help your guests fight the fall chill with warm fall beverages. Warm apple cider with a dash of cinnamon is a traditional seasonal favorite. Your guests will enjoy a coffee/hot chocolate bar, with samples of coffee from various parts of the world or varying hot chocolate recipes.
5) Delightful Desserts
Apple, pecan and pumpkin cobblers and pies are standards of the season. If you serve pie or cobbler, include a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a nice touch. Banana pudding traditionally pairs well with BBQ. Consider adding cinnamon sticks, caramel treats, or apple tarts to the dessert menu as well. You may also consider including a s'more-making station.
